NieR: Automata to Celebrate 9th Anniversary in 2026, Square Enix Teases “Small Surprise”

NieR: Automata, the renowned action RPG from Square Enix, is approaching its 9th anniversary in 2026, and the franchise has started making subtle moves to catch the attention of fans worldwide. Series producer Yosuke Saito recently hinted at a “small surprise” planned for the milestone, while cautioning fans not to expect anything major.

This information comes from a late-year interview with Japanese game developers published on 4Gamer. Yosuke Saito, who also produced Dragon Quest, emphasized that while 2026 will see a grand celebration for Dragon Quest’s 40th anniversary, NieR: Automata’s 9th anniversary will feature only modest content. He stressed fans should not overestimate the scale of the celebration.

Saito’s remarks reflect a cautious approach, aiming to manage expectations. In the past, fans have often speculated about major projects whether new installments, remakes, or direct sequels when teams may only intend to offer special events or minor content commemorating the game.

Around the same period, Square Enix continues to support the NieR and Drakengard universes. This includes the release of Drakengard 3 Original Soundtrack on PC via Steam and various music streaming platforms, as well as maintaining the NieR: Automata End of YoRHa Edition for smooth play on the latest Nintendo Switch models. The NieR: Automata Ver1.1a anime has completed all 24 episodes, and an orchestral concert with an accompanying album is planned for early 2026.

In summary, while Square Enix signals that something is in store for NieR: Automata’s 9th anniversary, the producer is clear that it won’t be a large-scale surprise. Nonetheless, given the series’ loyal fanbase, even a “small surprise” is expected to capture attention and reinforce the game’s enduring appeal.
