Baldur’s Gate III Unlikely to Launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Divinity Sequel Still Possible

While Larian Studios and Nintendo have maintained a close relationship bringing classic Baldur’s Gate games and next-gen Divinity II to Nintendo consoles the highly anticipated Baldur’s Gate III has yet to appear on the Nintendo Switch 2, even though the new hardware is far more powerful than its predecessor.
In a recent Reddit Q&A, Sven Vincke, head of Larian Studios, addressed the issue directly. He admitted a strong desire to port Baldur’s Gate III to Switch 2 but clarified that the decision ultimately was not up to the development team. The phrasing he used suggested that the project’s fate now lies with external licensing, stating that Baldur’s Gate III is effectively “their past.”

Despite this setback, there is more hope for fans regarding the upcoming Divinity sequel, unveiled at The Game Awards 2025. Larian Studios confirmed that they are considering a Switch 2 port for the new Divinity title, noting that the game is fully owned by the studio. This contrasts with Baldur’s Gate, which is based on Dungeons and Dragons and subject to licensing restrictions from other rights holders. Rumors also suggest a strained relationship between Larian and the owners of the Baldur’s Gate license in recent years.

About Baldur’s Gate III
Baldur’s Gate III is a role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms, featuring themes of friendship, betrayal, sacrifice, survival, and the pursuit of immense power. Players control a protagonist infected with a Mind Flayer parasite, granting dark powers. Players must decide whether to resist the parasite’s influence or embrace its energy to conquer the realms, ultimately shaping the fate of the city and its inhabitants.
Fans hoping to play Baldur’s Gate III on Switch 2 may have to wait indefinitely, but the Larian-owned Divinity franchise could still offer a strong presence on the platform in the near future.
