Final Fantasy XIV Confirmed in Development for Nintendo Switch 2

Final Fantasy XIV has sparked major attention within the MMORPG community after strong signals emerged pointing toward an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version. The confirmation comes directly from producer and director Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, during an in-game interaction with players at the start of New Year 2026.

This development suggests a new strategic direction for Square Enix as the long-running MMORPG prepares to enter its next chapter.

Yoshi-P Confirms Switch 2 Version Is in Development

According to player reports from the Pandaemonium server in Japan, Yoshi-P logged into Final Fantasy XIV during the New Year holiday, continuing his long-standing tradition of interacting directly with the community. While speaking with players at Costa del Sol, he answered several questions regarding the future of the game.

When asked directly whether Final Fantasy XIV would be released on Nintendo Switch, Yoshi-P replied, “Please look forward to the Switch version.” This response has been widely interpreted as a clear confirmation that the game is actively in development for Nintendo Switch 2, even though an official release date has not yet been announced.

Yoshi-P previously acknowledged the possibility of a Switch 2 version as early as 2024, reiterating in 2025 that the team was working toward the goal but required additional time due to technical challenges.

A Key Move During a Transitional Period for FFXIV

This announcement arrives at a critical moment for Final Fantasy XIV, as the game prepares for its next expansion following Dawntrail. Over the past year, the title has faced mixed feedback from players, alongside technical issues such as DDoS attacks and delayed updates.

Despite these challenges, the player base remains optimistic that Square Enix can stabilize the game’s direction while expanding its reach to new platforms. A portable version on Nintendo Switch 2 could significantly broaden the game’s audience, particularly in the SEA Region where handheld gaming continues to thrive.

Opportunities and Concerns Around a Portable MMORPG

The prospect of Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 has generated both excitement and concern. Some players worry that platform limitations could impact long-term graphical upgrades or system expansions. Others, however, see the ability to experience a full-scale MMORPG anytime and anywhere as a compelling evolution for the game.

Ultimately, whether this move becomes a defining success or a new development challenge remains to be seen. What is clear is that Square Enix is positioning Final Fantasy XIV for a broader, more flexible future.

As soon as more official details are revealed, This Is Game SEA will continue to provide timely updates.
