Krafton Confirms AI Is Only a Background Tool in Project Windless

Following the reveal of Project Windless at State of Play, Krafton has officially addressed concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the game’s development. The company emphasized that AI is not being used to generate story content, dialogue, or core gameplay elements that players directly experience.

AI Used Only for Early Research and Internal Efficiency

According to Krafton, the Montreal based development team uses AI strictly during the early research and exploration phase to improve workflow efficiency. Each studio under the Krafton umbrella is given full autonomy in choosing tools that best suit their project, and for Project Windless, the team remains committed to a traditional, handcrafted development philosophy.

AI assists only in non-creative processes such as internal data exploration and project management, allowing developers to focus more time on design, world building, and gameplay polish.

No Generative AI in Story or World Design

Krafton made it clear that Project Windless does not use generative AI for writing, world building, or narrative design. All story elements, characters, and environments are created manually by the development team to preserve artistic intent and originality.

The in game AI systems function like those in most modern titles, controlling NPC behavior such as movement, reactions, and environmental awareness, rather than creating content dynamically.

Investment in AI Focused on Support Systems

While Krafton previously announced a major investment in AI technology during 2025, the company clarified that this funding is primarily directed toward internal support systems. These include reducing administrative workloads and optimizing production pipelines, not replacing creative talent.

This approach ensures developers can dedicate their efforts to crafting a high quality open world experience rather than managing repetitive backend tasks.

A Handcrafted Open World Experience

Project Windless is set thousands of years before the events of the Korean fantasy novel The Bird That Drinks Tears. Players will take on the role of Rekon, a powerful bird like humanoid race navigating a fractured world filled with conflict and political tension. Player actions will shape the foundations of a forgotten era and influence the rise of future civilizations.

The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, with a strong emphasis on intense combat and large-scale encounters. While additional platforms have not yet been announced, the project has already generated strong interest among Action RPG fans worldwide.
