Half of US Kids Prefer Game Cash Over Traditional Gifts This Christmas

A new report from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) highlights the evolving trends in the gaming world, revealing that nearly half of American children want “Game Cash” as a gift this Christmas. The findings emphasize the growing importance of digital content for the next generation of players.

The survey of over 700 children in the U.S. found that almost three in five want video game-related gifts during the holiday season, with 43% specifically requesting in-game currency, such as that used in Fortnite or Roblox. These digital currencies have become popular gifts that allow children to purchase skins, items, and upgrades to enhance their gaming experience.

In comparison, 39% of respondents wanted a gaming console, and 37% wanted physical game discs, showing a clear preference for digital over traditional gifts.

ESA also surveyed over 1,000 adults about holiday gift plans and found that one-third intend to purchase video game-related gifts for friends and family, indicating continued growth in the gaming gift market among both children and adults.

Compared to last year, more children now want in-game currency while interest in physical game discs has declined. This shift demonstrates that digital gifts are becoming increasingly important and may even replace traditional presents in many cases.

The report underscores a new trend among young players who prefer digital currencies for their flexibility and the enhanced gaming experiences they provide. This trend reflects not only a cultural shift in gaming but also a broader change in consumption habits that favors digital content over physical products.
