Final Fantasy VII Remake Keeps Iconic Buster Sword After Debate

During the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake, the team at Square Enix seriously debated whether Cloud’s massive Buster Sword should be downsized to appear more realistic. Despite its enormous size and weight making one-handed swings seem improbable, the developers ultimately decided to keep the original design, believing it to be a defining element of Cloud’s character and a symbol cherished by fans worldwide for decades.

Behind the scenes of the debate over Cloud’s sword in Final Fantasy VII Remake

Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, revealed in an interview with Julien Chièze (translated by Shinra Archaeology Department on X) that the team considered a “more realistic” version of the sword. However, they concluded that changing it could alienate longtime fans and diminish its iconic presence. Preserving the classic Buster Sword not only retained the charm of the original game but also introduced new players to a symbol that has become synonymous with the franchise.

Keeping Cloud’s Buster Sword intact honors, the legacy of Final Fantasy VII while connecting both longtime fans and new players to its iconic identity.
