Gamers Turn to Laptop RAM as Desktop DIMM Prices Surge

Over the past year, desktop PC memory prices have climbed far beyond expectations, forcing gamers and PC builders to rethink how they upgrade their systems. With DIMM RAM prices skyrocketing, many users have begun turning to an unconventional yet cost-effective alternative: using laptop SODIMM memory in desktop PCs via SODIMM-to-DIMM adapters.

According to data from 3DCenter.org, laptop memory prices have risen far more slowly compared to their desktop counterparts. On average, SODIMM prices increased by around 136%, while desktop DIMM prices surged as high as 245%. This dramatic price gap has made laptop RAM a surprisingly attractive option for budget-conscious gamers looking to stretch their upgrade budgets.

As a result, SODIMM-to-DIMM adapters have rapidly become popular items across online marketplaces. These inexpensive adapters allow smaller laptop memory modules to be installed into standard desktop motherboard slots. For many users, this opens the door to repurposing leftover laptop RAM from older systems or purchasing second-hand SODIMM modules at significantly lower prices than brand-new desktop memory.

However, this workaround does come with trade-offs. SODIMM memory is primarily designed for power efficiency, which often means lower clock speeds and looser timings compared to desktop-grade DIMM RAM. Additionally, routing signals through an adapter can introduce instability or signal interference, potentially forcing the system to operate memory at reduced speeds to maintain stability.

Despite the performance limitations, the cost savings are difficult to ignore. For example, a 16GB DDR5-4800 SODIMM module is priced at roughly €100, while a desktop DIMM with the same specifications can cost around €146. That price difference of €46 (approximately 1,700 THB) can instead be redirected toward more impactful upgrades such as a better GPU or CPU.

Even after factoring in the relatively low cost of the adapter often only a couple of bucks and the overall savings remain substantial. For gamers on tight budgets, or those with unused laptop RAM sitting idle, using SODIMM memory in desktop PCs has become a practical stopgap solution, especially as desktop RAM prices show little sign of stabilizing before 2026.
