PlayStation 5 at Risk After ROM Key Leak, Hackers Eye Game Discs

The security of the PlayStation 5 is facing a serious challenge after a ROM Key tied to the console’s BootROM was leaked online, according to reports from Tom’s Hardware and Eurogamer. This development could potentially allow hackers to access the PS5 at a hardware level, enabling unauthorized execution of software and “pirate” or homebrew modes.

What the ROM Key Leak Means

The leaked ROM Key works in conjunction with the PS5’s BootROM, which normally verifies the integrity of software and prevents unauthorized code from running. Once the key is exposed, hackers can reverse-engineer the boot process and gain access to the system at a fundamental hardware level. Unlike software exploits, this type of breach cannot be patched via updates, making it especially concerning.

While the system has not yet been fully jailbroken, the risk is high. Hackers have reportedly named specific game discs that can trigger unauthorized software execution, driving up prices as collectors and other parties scramble to acquire them.
