Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Nears Historic Record, Closing In on Elden Ring’s GOTY Wins

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is rapidly approaching one of the most remarkable milestones in modern gaming history, as it continues to close the gap on Elden Ring in total Game of the Year awards.

Previously, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was reported as the second most awarded Game of the Year title of all time, trailing only Elden Ring. At that point, the game had already secured 334 GOTY awards, surpassing The Last of Us Part II, which held 326 awards, but still remaining well behind Elden Ring’s commanding total of 435 awards.

However, recent updates indicate that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has now climbed to an impressive 411 Game of the Year awards. With this surge, the game is now within striking distance of Elden Ring’s long-standing record, making it increasingly possible that the record could eventually be broken.

Below is the updated list of the top 10 games with the highest number of Game of the Year wins worldwide:

  1. Elden Ring – 435 awards
  2. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – 411 awards
  3. The Last of Us Part II – 326 awards
  4. Baldur’s Gate 3 – 288 awards
  5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – 281 awards
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 264 awards
  7. God of War (2018) – 263 awards
  8. The Last of Us – 257 awards
  9. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – 229 awards
  10. Astro Bot – 196 awards

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues to chase Elden Ring at a remarkable pace. Whether it will ultimately surpass Elden Ring remains to be seen, but its momentum is undeniable. Among its most notable achievements are winning Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards and securing Game of the Year honors at Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards.

The game also initially received a Game of the Year award from the Indie Game Awards. However, that recognition was later revoked due to limited use of AI during the development process, with the award ultimately being given to Blue Prince instead.

Both Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Elden Ring are widely regarded as modern masterpieces. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been praised for its emotionally resonant and distinctive storytelling, while Elden Ring earned critical acclaim for its expansive open-world design and punishing gameplay systems, hallmarks of FromSoftware, the studio behind the Dark Souls series.

As the debut title from Sandfall Interactive, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has exceeded all expectations. In addition to amassing over 400 Game of the Year awards, the game has also achieved strong commercial success, selling more than six million copies worldwide.
