Nintendo Shuts Down Otonatachi no Shima in Animal Crossing After 5 Years

Nintendo has officially shut down access to Otonatachi no Shima in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, bringing an end to one of the game’s most notorious player created islands after nearly five years of operation. The island, whose name roughly translates to “Adult’s Island,” had gained widespread attention for pushing the boundaries of what was possible inside Nintendo’s famously wholesome life simulation game.
One of the biggest reasons Animal Crossing: New Horizons became the best selling entry in the series, with sales surpassing 50 million copies worldwide, was the unprecedented level of creative freedom it offered. Players could fully redesign their islands, customize layouts, import QR codes for original artwork, and share their creations online. Combined with its release during a time when many people were seeking digital social spaces, the game quickly became a global phenomenon.
That freedom, however, also opened the door to more unconventional ideas. Among the many themed islands created by players, Otonatachi no Shima stood out the most. Accessible through the Dream Address system while players’ characters were asleep, the island featured adult themed environments designed entirely using in game assets. These included buildings styled like massage parlors, pachinko themed rooms, and provocative decorative arrangements enhanced with lighting and visual tricks.
What surprised many fans was how long the island remained accessible. Otonatachi no Shima had been open since the early patches of the game in mid 2020, effectively surviving for five years. With the release of version 3.0.0 earlier this week, the island’s creator, known as churip_ccc, confirmed that the Dream Address had been taken offline. The creator issued an apology to Nintendo for any inappropriate content while also expressing gratitude that the island had been allowed to exist for as long as it did, along with thanking streamers and online creators who supported and showcased the island over the years.
According to the creator, Otonatachi no Shima is unlikely to return anytime soon. After taking the island offline, churip_ccc has already moved on to building a new island with a different theme altogether. For many players, the closure marks the end of a unique chapter in Animal Crossing history, one that demonstrated just how creatively far players could stretch a game designed around charm and relaxation.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons remains a flagship life simulation title from Nintendo, where players develop a deserted island into a thriving community. Activities include fishing, bug catching, crafting, decorating, and interacting with animal villagers, alongside local and online multiplayer features. Even years after launch, stories like Otonatachi no Shima continue to highlight the unexpected cultural impact of the game and its player driven creativity.
