Sony May Delay PS6 Launch, Extending PS5 Lifecycle Further

Gamers who are saving up for PlayStation 6 may need to stay patient a little longer. According to a recent financial analysis by senior analyst David Gibson from MST Financial, Sony is reportedly considering extending the lifecycle of PlayStation 5 even further, significantly increasing the chances that the next-generation console launch will be delayed beyond earlier expectations.

The main reason behind this potential delay is the continued strong performance of PS5. During the third quarter, PlayStation business results exceeded market expectations, driven by robust game sales and sharply rising profits from the PlayStation Store. This momentum has left Sony’s gaming division in an extremely solid financial position, reducing the urgency to rush a new console to market.

Beyond sales performance, production costs are also a major factor influencing Sony’s strategy. One of the most critical concerns is the rising global price of RAM, largely fueled by increasing demand from the AI industry. Higher memory costs make next-generation hardware significantly more expensive to produce, forcing Sony to carefully reconsider how to balance performance upgrades with a consumer-friendly price point.

Previously, industry rumors suggested that Sony was targeting a PlayStation 6 release around 2027. However, under current conditions, analysts now believe the launch window could slip to 2028 or even 2029. This extended timeline would give Sony additional time to refine next-generation hardware while ensuring costs remain manageable for both the company and players.

For current PS5 owners, this shift should come as reassuring news. A longer PS5 lifecycle means developers will continue focusing on maximizing the console’s capabilities for several more years. With multiple high-profile titles still in development, PS5 remains a strong investment and a central platform for major releases.

That said, even if the official launch is delayed, it is widely expected that some form of PS6-related information may surface within the year. Sony is unlikely to remain completely silent for too long, especially as competitors continue advancing their own hardware strategies. Console fans will need to keep a close watch to see how Sony plans to shape its next big move and whether the extended wait will ultimately pay off.
