AKB48 Releases New Single Created Entirely by AI

AI Akimoto writes the lyrics, composes the music, and even selects the senbatsu lineup for AKB48’s latest single

Artificial intelligence continues to shape the music world, and now Japan’s iconic idol group AKB48 has fully embraced it. In a surprising turn, the group released a brand-new single where both the songwriting and senbatsu lineup were handled entirely by AI. Even more shocking, the AI-written track managed to win over fans in a head-to-head vote against a song written by a real producer.

Two weeks ago, legendary AKB48 producer Yasushi Akimoto introduced AI Akimoto, a model trained on his personal style and songwriting methods. To test its ability, two songs were released: Cecilé and Omoide Scroll. Fans were invited to vote for their favorite without knowing which was AI-generated.

Over the weekend, the results were revealed. Omoide Scroll, written by AI, won with more than 14,000 votes, leaving Cecilé—the song written by Akimoto himself—trailing in the low 10,000s. The announcement sparked debate, with some fans questioning whether Akimoto’s touch has lost its sharpness, while others campaigned to bring Cecilé back to streaming after it was swiftly removed following the vote.

What makes Omoide Scroll unique is that AI also selected the senbatsu lineup, crowning Ito Momoka as the center. The new member has often been compared in looks to BNK48’s Hoopa Patlee Praserttheerachai. The song’s lyrics focus on nostalgia through the lens of smartphones, delivered with a faster tempo compared to the relaxed French-pop vibe of Cecilé. Interestingly, some listeners pointed out awkward grammar that hinted at its AI origin, yet it still resonated strongly with voters.

AKB48, formed in 2005, remains a pioneer in the idol industry with its “idols you can meet” concept through rotating theater performances. Over the years, the brand has expanded internationally, spawning sister groups in the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, including BNK48 in Bangkok and CGM48 in Chiang Mai. With the rise of AI, this experiment could mark a new chapter not only for AKB48 but for the future of music itself.
