Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Director Reassures Fans of Switch 2 Port Quality

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Says Nintendo Players ‘Don’t Need to Worry’ About Switch 2 Port

The director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Naoki Hamaguchi, has personally addressed concerns from Nintendo players across the globe regarding the eventual port of the massive RPG to the Nintendo Switch 2. Despite the game pushing the technical limits of the PlayStation 5, Hamaguchi delivered a strong reassurance that the new console’s version would not compromise on quality.

Assurance of High Quality Port

In a recent interview with VGC, Hamaguchi spoke directly to the skepticism surrounding a demanding, open-world title like Rebirth running smoothly on a hybrid console.

  • Director’s Promise: Hamaguchi’s core message to Nintendo players was clear: “You really don’t need to worry at all.”
  • Quality Benchmark: He promised that the Switch 2 version of Rebirth would be “just as satisfying and just as high quality as the first game [Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade], if not higher.” This statement builds confidence following positive previews of the Remake Intergrade port, which is set to launch on the Switch 2 on January 22, 2026.

Optimization Lessons from Steam Deck

Hamaguchi pointed to the development team’s experience with PC optimization as the foundation for their confidence in the Switch 2 port.

  • PC Expertise: The team’s work on the PC version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth provided valuable experience in adapting the visually demanding Unreal Engine 4 game to various hardware specifications.
  • The Steam Deck Blueprint: Specifically, Hamaguchi highlighted the Steam Deck port as a key experiment. The positive reception to Rebirth running on Valve’s handheld, often described by players as running with surprisingly high quality, proved the team’s ability to efficiently scale the game to a mobile platform.
  • Streamlined Development: This prior experience allowed the team to develop technical know-how for supporting lower-spec hardware. The director explained that the Switch 2 optimization is now a more manageable process, leveraging systems already in place for the PC version that dynamically adjust resolution and other graphical elements.

The full Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is confirmed for the Nintendo Switch 2. This suggests Square Enix is fully committed to making the demanding sequels work seamlessly on Nintendo’s new hybrid console.

Our Take: The Portable Power of Midgar

Hamaguchi’s promise isn’t just a director being optimistic; it’s a veteran engineer basically giving us the technical green light. The Steam Deck was clearly their secret weapon, proving that they could squeeze the graphical majesty of Rebirth into a handheld format without it turning into a blurry, stuttering mess. If they can bring that sprawling, gorgeous world to the Switch 2 without major sacrifices, it’s a huge win for portable gaming and a testament to the new console’s capabilities. We are absolutely ready to fly our chocobos through the Grasslands while riding the train, assuming the final port doesn’t require a dozen of those controversial Game Key Cards.
