Among the most talked-about outcomes is Hollow Knight: Silksong winning Game of the Year, a result determined 100% by player votes on Steam. The victory came as a surprise to many, as it managed to outperform strong favorite Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which had been widely expected to take the top prize.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Claims Game of the Year at Steam Awards 2025

Valve has officially revealed the winners of Steam Awards 2025, with the most prestigious honor Game of the Year going to Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-awaited Metroidvania sequel from Team Cherry. The win marked a major moment for the indie scene, especially considering the competition from critically acclaimed titles such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a turn-based RPG that had dominated pre-award discussions.

While Valve did not disclose detailed voting percentages or internal metrics, Steam confirmed that all Steam Awards categories are decided solely by player votes, further reinforcing the significance of Silksong’s victory and the overwhelming support it received from the global community.

In addition to Game of the Year, Hollow Knight: Silksong also secured the Best Game You Suck At award recognizing games that are notoriously challenging yet irresistibly enjoyable. In this category, it surpassed nominees such as Path of Exile II, Elden Ring NIGHTREIGN, Marvel Rivals, and Where Winds Meet.

Meanwhile, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did not leave empty-handed, earning the Best Soundtrack award. Other notable winners at Steam Awards 2025 include The Midnight Walk (VR Game of the Year), Baldur’s Gate III (Labor of Love), Hades II (Best Game on Steam Deck), Peak (Better With Friends), Silent Hill f (Outstanding Visual Style), ARC Raiders (Most Innovative Gameplay), Dispatch (Outstanding Story Rich), and RV There Yet? (Sit Back & Relax).

Overall, this year’s Steam Awards highlighted the growing influence of indie and indie-adjacent titles, showing that community passion can rival even the biggest mainstream releases.

Originally conceived as downloadable content, Hollow Knight: Silksong evolved into a full standalone release. Players take on the role of Hornet, embarking on a perilous journey through a new kingdom ruled by silk and song after being captured and transported to a strange land. The game challenges players with brutal enemies, ancient mysteries, and vertical exploration across a vast Metroidvania-style map blending exploration, combat, and survival into a demanding yet deeply rewarding experience.
