SNK Recreates EVO Moment 37 in Fatal Fury CotW

An iconic fighting game moment returns in a perfect tribute to esports history

SNK has surprised the fighting game community by recreating the legendary EVO Moment 37 within Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and fans are loving every second of it. This is the same iconic moment from EVO 2004 where Daigo Umehara parried Justin Wong’s Chun Li super attack in Street Fighter III, a comeback so perfect that it became one of the most important clips in esports history. Even after more than twenty years, no fighting game highlight has matched the emotional intensity, crowd reaction, and timing mastery of Daigo’s parry into a counter combo.

In SNK’s recreation, both characters involved in the original showdown appear once again. Chun Li, recently added to the Season Pass lineup, joins Ken who is also part of the roster through special guest collaborations. To mark her arrival, SNK released a short showcase video reenacting EVO Moment 37 inside Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. The tribute is spot on with both characters wearing outfits styled like their classic looks. Ken appears in his karate uniform and Chun Li wears a white qipao. The attention to detail extends to the fact that players can freely customize their outfit colors, making the recreation even more authentic.

What makes this recreation particularly impressive is the animation work. Although Fatal Fury does not use a parry mechanic like Street Fighter III, SNK used Ken’s Just Defend system to simulate the parry sequence. The Just Defend animation shows Ken guarding with his fist forward, visually similar to Daigo’s parry inputs in the original moment. Even Justin Wong reacted to the clip on social media, humorously saying “Get out now,” showing that even after years, the memory of that intense match still follows him.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is now officially available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and PlayStation 4. The game continues the legacy of Garou Mark of the Wolves with fast paced two dimensional one versus one battle. The title includes a story campaign called Episode of South Town, along with arcade mode, local versus, and a training mode for players who want to master combos and perfect their timing. This latest nod to fighting game history shows that SNK knows how to celebrate the culture and passion of the global fighting game community.

THIS IS OUR SAY:
SNK did not just recreate a moment. They paid respect to the most legendary scene in fighting game history. This is the kind of fan service that builds hype around a game. If City of the Wolves keeps delivering content that honors the history of fighting games, it is on track to become the new must play title for competitive players and casual fans alike.
