PlayStation Portal Adds Cloud Streaming Support
Sony has updated its PlayStation Portal handheld to support cloud streaming of PS5 games, making the device usable without a PS5 console. Under the new beta feature, users with PlayStation Plus Premium can stream a curated catalogue of PS5 titles directly to the Portal.
At launch the device offers streaming of more than 120 PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, including high-profile titles. The streaming runs at up to 1080p resolution at 60fps and requires a minimum internet speed of about 13 Mbps.
What the Beta Covers and What It Omits
While the addition makes the Portal far more independent, some limitations remain. The streaming is restricted to games within the subscription catalogue—owned titles outside that list cannot yet be streamed. Earlier generation games for PS4 or PS3 are not supported and features such as in-game purchases, party voice chat, game trials and 3D audio are still inactive.
How Southeast Asia Gamers Might Benefit
For gamers in Southeast Asia the upgrade signals greater flexibility and value. The ability to access PS5 titles without needing a console could lower the barrier to entry. It may also stimulate interest in handheld‐style PlayStation gaming across the region. Yet the reliance on strong internet connectivity means performance may vary depending on local infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
Sony describes the feature as being early stage with further improvements coming. Future updates may expand game support, improve features such as multiplayer invites and voice chat and eventually enable streaming of games players already own. The Portal’s role could evolve into a portable PlayStation option for global gamers.
