Honkai: Nexus Anima May Be Violating a Nintendo Patent, Experts Warn

What the IP Expert Says

Honkai: Nexus Anima, the upcoming creature-collector adventure strategy game from HoYoverse, has sparked concern from an IP expert. The issue centers on footage showing players summoning and mounting flying creatures—similar mechanics already under scrutiny by Nintendo in its lawsuit against Palworld’s developer. According to Florian Mueller, the gameplay showcased in Nexus Anima “clearly infringes” the updated patent covering the transition to riding airborne mounts.

Why This Patent Matters

Nintendo’s patent was recently amended to cover any act of “summoning, mounting, then riding a flying creature.” In the Palworld case, this led to a forced removal of gliding creatures and replacement with glide items. Although the IP consultant called the patent overly broad and possibly unreasonable, there’s no guarantee that Nintendo won’t take legal action against HoYoverse.

Nexus Anima: What We Know

Beyond the IP issue, Honkai: Nexus Anima is confirmed as a new entry in the Honkai universe, blending creature collection, auto-chess battles, and exploration. It features colorful open-world environments and adorable spirit companions known as Anima. Trademark filings and fan excitement hint at its significance, and HoYoverse recently opened recruitment for a global test running through September 12.

Final Thought

If HoYoverse’s new title truly mirrors patented gameplay mechanics, they could face legal challenges just like Palworld did. But with smart design tweaks or alternative mechanics, they could sidestep disputes while still delivering an exciting creature-based experience. Given HoYoverse’s track record and the size of the spotlight on Nexus Anima, it’s a scenario worth watching closely. The game’s future may hinge as much on its legal finesse as on its creative appeal.
